Kazakh FM: Astana talks only base to establish peace in Syria

Baku, Dec 23, IRNA – Kazakhstan Foreign Minister Gheirat Abdelrahamanov said on Friday that Syrian Peace Talks in Astana serve as a full-scale and unique foundation for all interested parties to establish stability in Syria.

Speaking at the eighth round of Syria peace talks, he added that military conflicts in Syria have come to an end for nearly 12 months and this is an important achievement.

Despite the fact that the current situation in Syria cannot be called satisfactory, he added, establishment of de-escalate zones has brought about gradual improvement in the country’s situation.

Abdelrahamanov hoped that the new year will be a successful year for all and that the cooperation atmosphere dominant in Astana as well as all the parties’ efforts will lead to establishment of peace in Syria in 2018.

Kazakhstan is ready for all necessary cooperation, he said noting that the next session will be held in Astana in mid-February 2018.

On Thursday and Friday, Astana hosted the meeting attended by representatives from Russia, Turkey and Iran, which are the guarantor states that brokered a cease-fire in Syria in December 2016, leading to the Astana peace talks that are running parallel to Geneva talks.
