Iranian boxer refuses to play against Zionist rival

Orumiyeh, Dec 22, IRNA – An Iranian boxer fighting at Azerbaijan's Agalarov Cup refused to play against an opponent from the Israeli regime, a local official said here on Friday.

The gesture by Mobin Abbasi 52 kg was made in defense of and solidarity with the oppressed Palestinian people, said Morteza Nazari, head of Boxing Committee of West Azarbaijan Province.

Iran does not recognize the Zionist regime of Israel and Iranian athletes refuse to play against Israeli opponents.

Iranian wrestler Alireza Karimi, 23, in November threw the match to his Russian rival at U23 World Senior Wrestling Championship (2017) in Polish city of Bydgoszcz to avoid competing with a representative from the Zionist regime of Israel.

144 boxers from in 14 teams are fighting in the Agalarov Cup, Nazari said adding that three athletes from West Azarbaijan Province are also competing at the competition.

Agalarov Cup (Dec 20-25) is underway in Republic of Azerbaijan's capital, Baku.
