Quake rocks western Iran again

Tehran, Dec 21, IRNA – An earthquake measuring 4.6 on Richter scale jolted Sarpol-e Zahab in Kermanshah Province, western Iran late on Wednesday.

The tremor occurred at 23: 31 local time late on Wednesday (20:01 GMT). No casualties or damage to properties have so far been reported.

The epicenter of the quake was recorded at 83.45 degrees longitude and 34.47 degrees latitude in the depth of 8km.

Sarpol-e Zahab was hit by a fatal 7.3-magnitude earthquake on November 12 which killed at least about 600 people and injured several thousands more.

The Wednesday night tremor in Sarpol-e Zahab occurred a few minutes after a 5.2-magnitude quake jolted the Iranian capital city of Tehran sending the panic-stricken people to the streets.

Tehran’s quake was also felt in Qom, Gilan, Qazvin and Markazi provinces.

No damage or casualties has been reported by the tremor.
Iran is crisscrossed by major geological fault lines and has suffered several devastating earthquakes in recent years.
