WAsia no better place without JCPOA: Iran deputy FM

Tehran, Dec 15, IRNA – The Middle East would not be a better place in the absence of Iran nuclear deal also known as Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Iranian deputy foreign minister told Japan's Kyodo News in Vienna.

'It's up to the U.S. government and Mr. Trump. If he feels that the Middle East will be a better place without (the nuclear deal), then he can try it,' Abbas Araqchi was quoted saying on Thursday.

On October 13, Trump announced that his administration would not certify Iran's commitment to the deal. The decision came after several reports by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) approving that Iran has been acting fully in accordance with the JCPOA.

”Ministry [Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs] and the Iran Atomic Energy Organization already have instructions on how to react if the US government pulls out,' he sid.

'The nuclear deal is not renegotiable and also it's not possible to open and add anything else to it.'

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian diplomat said 'the deal was unanimously endorsed by the U.N. Security Council and the International Atomic Energy Agency has repeatedly confirmed Iran's compliance with its obligations.'

Commenting on the internal conflicts between Trump and the US Congress, he said 'this has nothing to do with us. What is important for us is U.S. full compliance.'

'The U.S. delegation assured the Joint Commission that the United States remains committed to fulfilling its obligations under the deal, even as it has imposed sanctions against Iran since implementation began and is mulling even more,' said Araqchi referring to the talks in Vienna.

The meeting of the Joint Commission on JCPOA which was co-chaired by Araqchi and secretary-general of the European Union's Foreign Policy Service Helga Schmidt was held with the representatives of the 5+1 Group in Vienna on Wednesday at the level of political directors.
