ECO Day commemorated in Pakistan with Iran’s presence

Islamabad, Dec 4, IRNA -- A diplomatic reception and photo and cultural exhibition of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) member countries, including Iran, was held at Pakistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs to celebrate ECO Day 2017.

ECO Day is celebrated on the date of the adoption of the 'Protocol amending the Treaty of Izmir' signed on 28th November 1992 at the 'Extraordinary Meeting of the ECO Council of Ministers' in Islamabad.

Speakers at the occasion underscored the importance of the ECO. They referred to the Islamabad Declaration and ECO vision 2025 that lay tangible goals for ECO.

The Embassies of Iran, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan participated in the event. The display reflected the common historical and cultural identity of ECO member countries.

Chairperson, Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Nuzhat Sadiq, Chairman Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs of the National Assembly, Makhdum Khusro Bakhtyar and Deputy Chairman Planning Commission Sartaj Aziz also attended the event.

The Economic Cooperation Organization or ECO is a ten member political and economic intergovernmental organization which was founded in 1985 in Tehran by the leaders of Iran, Pakistan and Turkey. It provides a platform to discuss ways to improve development and promote trade and investment opportunities.

ECO's secretariat and cultural department are located in Iran, its economic bureau is in Turkey and its scientific bureau is situated in Pakistan.
