Iran veep confers with UN deputy chief

Tehran, Dec 1, IRNA – Iranian first vice president, who is in the Russian city of Sochi to attend an international meeting, conferred with the United Nations under secretary-general on Friday.

The Iranian official Eshaq Jahangiri and Ms. Shamshad Akhtar, who is also Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), discussed issues of mutual interest.

The meeting occurred on the sidelines of the 16th meeting of the Council of Heads of Governments of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s (SCO) member states held in the Russian resort city of Sochi.

Jahangiri is slated to address the SCO on its capacities for developing regional cooperation and expound on Iran’s potentials in the economic, scientific and technical areas, especially in the post-nuclear deal era.

SCO is an intergovernmental organization founded by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan in 2001 in a bid to promote multilateral cooperation in the fields of security, economy and culture.

Iran, Mongolia, Afghanistan and Belarus have joined the entity as observer members.

Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan and India are current members of SCO.
