Archeologists discover 3rd horse burial from Parthian era in northern Iran

Tehran, Sep 12, IRNA - The second season of archeological excavations in the Vastmin cemetery in Kiasar, Mazandaran Province, led to the discovery of the third horse burial from the Parthian era.

The Public Relations Office of the Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization (RICHT) quoted Abdolmotaleb Sharifi, head of the archaeological team on Tuesday as saying, “The aim of the archeological excavations in the Vastmin site and cemetery is to explore the 12 crypts remaining from the calendar year 1394 (2015-2016) explorations and determining the limits and privacy of the site.”

He underscored the importance of conducting probing operations for determining the limits and proposing the privacy of the 15-hectare Vastmin area, saying with the probing conducted it was found out that over 250 crypts exist in that location.

Pointing out that one of the burial traditions in the Parthian era was to bury the horse together with its dead owner, Sharifi said, “In this tradition they would suffocate the horse and bury it along with the body of its owner.”

The previous explorations in the site two horse burials were discovered and in the present season of explorations archeologists succeeded in discovering the third horse burial in the area, he noted.
