Cultures can help counter extremism: Greek official

Athens, Aug 26, IRNA – Mayor of a Greek island on Friday referred to Iran as a country with rich culture, stressing that familiarity with rich cultures can help nations fight extremism and prejudice.

'Iran enjoys a rich culture, and has offered valuable services to the world people' Mayor of the Lefkada Island in west coast of Greece Kostas Drakontaidis said in a meeting with Iran's Cultural Attaché in Athens Ali-Mohammad Helmi.

Helmi visited Lefkada Island to attend the 55th International Folklore Festival of Lefkada which is being held from August 20-27.

Iran attended the event by holding an exhibition of handicrafts, paintings, miniature, calligraphy, local costumes, and books.

Drakontaidis said the festival is aimed at making the world nations familiar with each others' cultures in order to ensure the global peace and peaceful coexistence within the people around the world.

For his part, the Iranian diplomat said Iran with its rich civilization has always been trying to establish peace and tranquility in the region, and also in the entire world. To this end, Helmi added, Tehran has taken major steps such as conducting cultural, scientific, art and religious conferences.
