Tehran, Aug 14, IRNA - Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in a decree appointed, for the next five years, Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi as Chairman of the Expediency Discernment Council.

After the demise of late Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, Ali Movahedi-Kermani was appointed as acting chairman of the council.

Shahroudi was First Vice-Chairman of the Iranian Assembly of Experts.

Iran's Expediency Discernment Council is an administrative assembly appointed by the Supreme Leader.

It was created upon the revision to the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran on 6 February 1988.

The Council was originally set up to resolve differences or conflicts between the Majlis and the Guardian Council, but its true power lies more in its advisory role to the Supreme Leader.

The legal entities of the council are as follow:
1.Heads of three branches of government
2.The jurisprudents of the Guardian Council
3.Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces
4.Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council
5.The minister concerned depending on the subject under discussion
6.The representative of Majlis (Iranian Parliament) commission concerning the subject discussed.

Mohsen Rezaei has been reinstated by Ayatollah Khamenei as Secretary of the Expediency Council and the Supreme Leader has also appointed natural members of the council.
