Saudi crown prince calls on Iraq to help ease Tehran, Riyadh tensions

Tehran, Aug 13, IRNA – Iraqi Interior Minister Qasim al-Araji said on Saturday that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman has asked him to mediate between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Al-Arji made the remarks during a meeting in Tehran with his Iranian counterpart Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli.

He said that during a recent visit to Riyadh, the Saudi crown prince has asked him to play a mediatory role to deescalate tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Earlier, Saudi King had also made the same demand, the minister said.

'I told them that they must treat the Iranian Hajj pilgrims respectively in the best way,' al-Arji said.

'We believe that friendly relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia can help the regional security.'

The Iranian minister, for his part, said that Iran has always been after having relations with Saudi Arabia.

Tehran's policy is based on effective cooperation with regional countries and Iran was not the country that took the first step in cutting relations with Saudi Arabia, Rahmani Fazli said.
