Zarif warns Europe of US effort to eliminate JCPOA

Tehran, Aug 5, IRNA – Foreign Minister Mohammad-Javad Zarif said Europe should be vigilant of the US President Donald Trump's efforts to remove the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Zarif made the remarks in a meeting with High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, who is here to attend President Hassan Rouhani's swearing-in ceremony.

He said, 'Mr. Trump, the US President, tries to remove the JCPOA at Iran cost; so, Europe should be vigilant in that connection.'

He went on to say that the new US administration seeks to avoid Iran benefit from the JCPOA, which is in violation of the accord's spirit.

Also referring to Iran's missile test and launching of Simorgh (Phoenix) satellite carrier into the space and non-contradiction of the measures with the resolution 2231, Zarif criticized recent statement of the three European countries, issued along with the US, and said it is a move in wrong direction.

Mogherini in turn expressed pleasure with presence in Iran to attend the oath-taking ceremony and said international community shares common interests with Iran in the JCPOA implementation.

'The EU categorically supports the JCPOA and it is the joint stance of all European states,' she added.

The EU envoy said, 'The EU stance on the issue is well clear and we try to have the US join us in connection with the JCPOA. All of us need taking wise and proportionate measures.'

The two sides discussed Iran-EU cooperation in various domains, including economic fields.

They exchanged views on regional issues, Syria, Astana talks, Persian Gulf developments, conditions in Yemen, campaign against Daesh Takfiri terrorism and the need to probe into deplorable conditions of the people of Yemen, Bahrain and Iraq.
