Claims of sending arms to Yemen from Iran 'thoroughly baseless': Senior official

Tehran, March 8, IRNA - Senior advisor to Majlis speaker for International Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian here on late Tuesday described claims that Iran is sending arms to Yemen as 'completely baseless'.

Hossein Amir Abdollahian made the remarks in a meeting with visiting Assistant State Secretary and Head of Middle East and North Africa Division of Switzerland Wolfgang Amadeus Bruelhart.

Expressing satisfaction over the progress of Tehran-Bern relations, the Iranian official underlined that Switzerland plays a pivotal role in presenting constructive solutions for settlement of regional crises.

Pointing to Tehran-Riyadh relationship, he said Saudi Arabia is not behaving in a constructive manner in the region.

Amir Abdollahian said Riyadh must make tangible changes in its regional policies.

Referring to the continuation of Saudi Arabia’s military aggression against the innocent people of Yemen, he said the presence of terrorist groups is increasing in south of Yemen.

He said the presence of terrorists in south of Yemen is threatening not only the regional security, but is undermining the security of international waters.

He said Iran considers political negotiations as the sole way for settlement of Yemen crisis.

Hailing the role of Lebanese Hezbollah in tackling terrorists in Lebanon and Syria, he said Hezbollah plays a pivotal role in establishing security in the region.

Bruelhart, for his part, called for expansion of all-out ties between Iran and Switzerland.

Touching upon problems of regional peoples, Palestinians, Yemenis and Syrians in particular, he voiced his country's willingness to support them.

Pointing to the recent talks held in Astana and Geneva for settling Syrian crises, he added such meetings are vital for establishing peace in the region.
