Pentagon claims Iranian boats intercepted US vessel in Hormuz Strait

Tehran, Aug 26, IRNA – Foreign media quoted a Pentagon official as claiming that four Iranian boats have intercepted a US destroyer in the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf.

According to those reports the Iranian boats have closely approached the American destroyer, USS Nitze, at a high speed in the vicinity of the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf waters.

The un-named US official further claimed that the Iranian boats had come within 300 yards of the USS Nitze.

The US official described the proximity of the Iranian boats to the US destroyer as 'harassing' and 'dangerous'.

However, Iran's Defense Minister Hossein Dehqan on Thursday commented on the activities of the Iranian speeding boats in the Persian Gulf.

He said that ensuring security of the Persian Gulf is within the responsibilities of the Iranian naval units which oversee activities of foreign vesseles in the region and are concentrated on commuting, patrolling and monitoring activities of foreign ships.
