De Mistura 'optimistic', 'determined' to hold on intra-Syrian talks

Tehran, Jan 31, IRNA – UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura on Sunday expressed his optimism and determination to hold on to the intra-Syrian talks in Geneva.

There is hard work being done, De Mistura said in a short statement after an informal meeting he held with the Saudi-backed armed opposition delegation in one of Geneva hotels, according to SANA news agency.
“I am optimistic and determined because it’s a historic occasion not to be missed.”
It is still unclear whether the delegation would agree to an official meeting at the UN headquarters later, said de Mistura, adding it is up to them to let him know.
Hours after their late arrival to the Swiss city flying on board a Saudi plane, members of the Riyadh-formed opposition delegation threatened to walk away from Geneva talks if their demands were not to be met.
Bashar al-Jaafari, head of the delegation of the Syrian Arab Republic to the talks, said the delayed attendance of the delegation is a sign of “lack of seriousness and responsibility”.
