Iran's former army chief commander passes away

Tehran, Jan 30, IRNA – Former Army Commander and top military aide to the Iranian Leader Major General Mohammad Salimi passed away at the age of 78 on Saturday.

Major General Salimi died at the age of 78 in Tehran after a long period of illness.

The top general was born in the holy city of Mashhad in 1937.

He served as chief commander of the Iranian Army during 2000-2005.

Major General Salimi also served as Iranian Defense Minister during 1981-1984.

The top general played a key role in several battles during the 1980-88 Iraqi-imposed war against Iran, including the liberation of Sousangerd city in Southern Iran for which he received Nasr (Victory) Medal for his bravery from Leader of the Islamic Revolution.
