Malaysia to attract 8 million Chinese tourists annually

Tehran, Jan 28, IRNA – Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said his country has set the target to annually draw eight million tourists from China over the next five years, with 22.1 billion Malaysian Ringgits spending power, Bernama reported.

He said the figure of eight million would seem huge compared to the 1.3 million Chinese tourists who visit Malaysia annually now, but it was not impossible to attain with proper planning and effective promotion.
'The RM22.1 billion spending power may seem very big but it is not impossible to garner because each Chinese tourist spends on the average RM3,345 now on food, lodging and shopping,' Ahmad Zahid said when opening the Freeport A'Famosa Outlet that offers fashion, sport and accessories brands.
Despite recording a large number of tourist arrivals last year, Malaysia wants to focus on attracting tourists from certain countries over the next five years, he said. He added that most drastic measures must be taken to draw tourists to Malaysia because tourist spending in the country would have an immediate positive effect on the national economy.
'We find that their spending habit has a positive impact on the economy of our country,' Ahmad Zahid said.
He stated that relevant tourist agencies would be assisted to obtain supplementary allocations in the effort to enhance the national tourism sector.
