Lat Caravanserai to be converted into reception, lodging center

Tehran, Jan 27, IRNA - Lat Caravanserai which is located on the Rasht-Tehran route will be used as a reception complex and lodging center for travelers during Norouz (new Iranian year) holidays, said the director general of Gilan Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts, and Tourism Department.

“We intend to convert the caravanserai into a reception and lodging site with the contribution of the private sector,” said Reza Alizadeh, according to an Iran Daily report on Wednesday.

He put the number of registered historical monuments in Rasht at 104. “A new image of Rasht will emerge following the steps taken by Rasht Municipality.”

Lat Caravanserai also known as ‘Shah Abbasi Caravanserai’ pertains to the Safavid era.

There are pavilions in caravanserai which were used as permanent and temporary residences. Also, there are shafts in the corners of the caravanserai.

The caravanserai is made of brick and stone with mortar of calcareous sand. There are shops, bakery and a local eatery near the caravanserai.

The proximity of Lat Caravanserai to Emamzadeh Hashem has added to its significance.

Given its architectural features, the caravanserai can be turned into a marketplace and permanent handicraft exhibition of Gilan province.

Caravanserai is a Persian word for a roadside inn built around a large court for accommodating caravans. Basically it is compound word — ‘caravan’ meaning a group of travelers, as merchants or pilgrims, journeying together for safety in passing through deserts, hostile territory, etc. and ‘serai’ meaning a place to stay specially a house built around a courtyard.
