Defense min.: Pakistan wants Iran, S Arabia tensions removed

Islamabad, Jan 27, IRNA -- Pakistan Defense Minister Khawaja Asif says his country wants easing of tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

According to Pakistan state radio, the defense minister also said that the initiative taken by Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif to mediate between Tehran and Riyadh has been lauded at international level.

He, however, said Pakistan will stand by Saudi Arabia in any threat to its territory or sovereignty.

Earlier Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had said that Pakistan is waiting for response from Iran and Saudi Arabia regarding Islamabad meditation efforts to defuse tensions between Tehran and Riyadh

After meeting Iran President Hassan Rouhani on January 19, Nawaz Sharif said that Pakistan and Iran had agreed to appoint 'focal persons' to follow up Islamabad mediation effort.
