Analyst: Attacks on embassy is equal to treason

Tehran, Jan 5, IRNA - Saudi Arabia executed a Shia cleric who was known for his attempts to bring about proximity between the Shia and Sunni Muslims.

Sadrodin Moosavi in the Tuesday edition of Tehran-based English newspaper, Iran Daily, wrote, many international organizations as well as many governments and NGOs across the world condemned the miscalculated move.

In Iran also the government vehemently condemned the act. However, two untoward moves happened in Iran which, in fact, exacerbated the situation and deteriorated Tehran-Riyadh relations which were not in good shape due to regional developments.

In Tehran and Mashad, self-styled groups attacked the consulate and embassy of Saudi Arabia, inflicting some damage on the premises. The acts were vigorously condemned by President Hassan Rouhani and his interior minister ordered the arrest of the culprits, which led to the detention of 40 attackers.

There is no doubt that the attacks must be strongly condemned by any Iranian citizen who slightly cares for national interests. Back in 1988, then president and incumbent Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, during a Friday prayers sermon, said, “As a government official, Friday prayers leader and a cleric, I announce to you: Do not touch the embassies. If you are not happy with the policies of Britain or the US or any other country, the solution is not to unbridledly climb the walls of embassies. I bear witness before you that this is definitely, I repeat, definitely to the detriment of Islam, Muslims and the Islamic Republic. Well, people demonstrate, hold rallies and express their emotions; sincere, proper, logical emotions, there is no doubt about it. They pour into the streets and utter their viewpoints against some policies, but they must not get close to embassies… Maybe the enemy does it; the infiltrators of the enemy may infiltrate some groups and climb the walls of an embassy, throw fireballs or damage or destroy some places. Bear in mind that such an act is definitely bad and is a crime. It is harmful and if someone does such a thing knowingly, it is a treason.

Based on the above statement, the attacks are treason. The officials must bring the culprits to book and punish them, giving lessons to those who take the law into their hands.
