Protest against execution of Sheikh Nimr in Tehran today

Tehran, Jan 3, IRNA – Governance of Tehran city announced that a demonstration against execution of the Shia Muslim cleric Sheikh Nimr will be staged here Sunday at 15:00 hours local time.

The protest is being held in Palestine Square, center of Tehran, due to demand from different political parties.

In a statement, Tehran's Governance said the brutal Saudi measures are endangering the security and tranquility in both world and region.

However, it added, such measures will develop the Islamic Awakening and freedom-seeking movements.

After execution of Sheikh Nimr a group of youth gathered illegally in front of Saudi Embassy in Tehran and damaged the embassy's building last night. A number of security forces were also injured when trying to disperse the protesters.

The Police forces arrested a number of demonstrators.

Criticizing such actions, in a statement issued today Tehran's Governance condemned any kind of violation against the diplomatic places.

Saudi Arabia on Saturday executed Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, a Shia Muslim cleric known for his sermons criticizing the kingdom’s government and for his support of political protests in the country’s oil-rich Eastern Province.

According to the al-Arabiya News Agency, the Saudi Interior Ministry on Saturday said 47 people convicted of what the ministry called terrorism have been executed.

Prominent Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr was among those executed.
