Tehran, Dec 31, IRNA -- Syria's Grand Mufti Sheikh Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun said that Iran's support for Syria is not defending a particular person, but it is defending Islam against the enemies' threats and resistance against the Israel.

Sheikh Hassoun made the remarks in a meeting with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian in Tehran on Thursday.

'The Islamic Republic of Iran's defense from Syria is not defending a specific person, but it is defending Islam and the Muslims against the enemies of Muslim world and also defending the axis of resistance against the Zionist regime,' the Syrian grand mufti said.

Sheikh Hassoun thanked the diplomatic efforts of Iran at international bodies, specially the recent Vienna and New York, and reiterated that the Islamic Republic of Iran's role and that of Foreign Minister Dr. Mohammad Javad Zarif is the source of hope and honor.

Amir Abdollahian, for his part, underlined Tehran's continued support for the Syrian people and government in efforts to push terrorists out of their country.

Recalling the threat of terrorism and extremism against the region and the world, he voiced Iran's full support for any regional nations against the occupiers and the Takfiri terrorists.

Despite the four-year-long activities of extremist and terrorist groups in Syria, the Syrians are continuing their resistance against the terrorists groups along with the legitimate government of Damascus, Amir Abdollahian added.

He stressed that the Iranian government and nation would fully support the Syrian people and government in tackling the terrorist groups.

Iran has supported the Syrian people and government since the very first days of terrorists' attacks against the Muslim nation by sending humanitarian aids and military advisors.
