Oman ready to mediate between Iran and Saudi Arabia: Bin Alawi

Berlin, Nov 13, IRNA -- Oman is ready to mediate between Iran and Saudi Arabia, if such a formal bid is made, Omani Foreign Minister Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah said in Berlin on Friday after his meeting with German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Asked by IRNA at a press briefing at the foreign ministry whether Oman would be willing to embark on such a mediation mission, Oman's top diplomat reiterated his government would be ready for good office.

Bin Alawi made clear stable ties between Tehran and Riyadh were 'very important' to Omani government.

He stressed talks between both regional powers could ultimately lead to some sort of understanding on various issues.

There are without a doubt difference of opinions between both sides but I am optimistic that there can be a solution to the difference of opinions, if there is a will for it, the Omani official added.

On Syria, bin Alawi said diplomatic means were the only solution to the five-year-old conflict.

Pointing to his recent meeting with Syrian President Bashar Assad, the Omani minister said talks dwelt on likely new prospects for the Syrian peace process.

On Yemen, Oman's chief diplomat expressed cautious optimism on de-escalating the military conflict.

There are positive signals when it comes to a ceasefire in Yemen, said bin Alawi, adding the basis for negotiations is the seven-point UN plan.

Meanwhile, the German foreign minister welcomed Iran's participation at the Syria talks in Vienna, calling it 'a minor progress' in a bid to de-escalate the Syrian conflict.

Steinmeier urged 'further confidence-building steps' between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Labeling the Syria talks 'encouraging', the German minister said they were the first steps in the Syrian political process aimed at ending the war in that country.

He acknowledged though no one should not underestimate the difficulties on the path for a political solution of the Syrian crisis.

Bin Alawi and Steinmeier are scheduled to attend the Syrian talks in Vienna on Saturday.
