Esmail Abbasi wrote in Tehran-based English newspaper Iran Daily on Wednesday that “Given the geological structure of the country, TBM systems accelerate the control of water resources and organize the growing urban population. It is a good alternative for controlling wastewater across the country.
TBM is used in controlling underground and surface waters and creating appropriate urban environment by checking traffic congestion.
It helps people and government to use the capacities to control, organize and create a secure environment. It also boosts cultural development of the society.
Unfortunately, the use of TBM has not so widespread in Iran. A majority of the tunnels are created by using traditional methods. This has delayed the development of the country.
Developing the country by relying on traditional tunneling methods is not very realistic. Development is the need of our society today. Development and diversity are tied to the mentality of the society which should play a more active role in this.
TBM systems have a wide range of applications.
The main advantages and disadvantages of using TBM systems are:
Advantages
1. High mechanization rate
2. Creation of precise sections of the tunnel
3. The least impact on the Earth’s surface structures
4. High safety for people
5. Adaptability to environment, preserving the level of underground waters, and low noise
6. Economic and high-quality tunnel coating
Disadvantages
1. Long preparation time for planning, construction and assembly
2. Time spent on familiarizing the people with this method.
3. Costly equipments. It is a difficult task. The method is economical only for digging long routes.
4. Procedures are only possible for circular sections.
Certainly, the economic strategies for tunneling machine are possible and in many cases, tunneling machine is much more efficient than methods such as cut-and-cover method, or other common methods for digging tunnels.
