Ex-German foreign minister urges West to trust Iran on nuclear deal

Berlin, Apr 2, IRNA -- Former German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel called on the West to trust Iran when it comes to Tehran meeting its obligations under a nuclear deal.

Speaking to the German radio station DEUTSCHLANDFUNK, Kinkel stressed we have 'no choice but to trust Iran' once we have a nuclear agreeement.

'In my opinion Iran can and should be trusted,' added Kinkel who was Germany's foreign minister from 1992 through 98 under then-chancellor Helmut Kohl.

He welcomed western efforts to seal a nuclear accord with Iranmafter 12 years of negotiations.

Kinkel urged the West also to deepen its dialogue and political contacts with Iran, saying the Islamic Republic was 'too important' to simply be sidelined on the global political scene.
