Late Serena was killed in a car accident near Turkey-Syria border as she was working on a reportage mission about the strategic Kurdish town of Kobani in Syria near the Turkish border.
Shim, an American citizen of Lebanese origin, had covered reports for Press TV in Lebanon, Iraq, and Ukraine.
'Mrs. Shim who was originally Lebanese was killed in Turkey and near border with Kobani in a suspected accident,' Hamid Reza Emadi, director of Press TV's newsroom, told IRNA on Sunday.
'Mrs. Shim had the experiences of presence in Ukraine's Donetsk protests, Baghdad and border towns of Turkey and Syria and she prepared exclusive and field reports from Turkey-Syria border for Press TV network.
Emadi noted that Serena was very brave in covering the missions bestowed on her, and said, 'She was mother of two small children.'
On Friday, she told Press TV that the Turkish intelligence agency had accused her of spying probably due to some of the stories she has covered about Turkey’s stance on the Islamic State of the Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorists in Kobani and its surrounding areas, adding that she feared being arrested.
Shim said she was among the few journalists obtaining stories of militants infiltrating into Syria through the Turkish border, adding that she had received images from militants crossing the Turkish border into Syria in World Food Organization and other NGOs’ trucks.
Shim flatly rejected accusations against her, saying she was “surprised” at this accusation “because I have nothing to hide and I have never done anything aside my job.”
Kobani and its surroundings have been under attack since mid-September, with the ISIL militants capturing dozens of nearby Kurdish villages.
