Iran condoles with Algeria over plane crash disaster

Tehran, July 24, IRNA -- Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham extended his condolences to the Algerian government and nation on the sad occasion of the death of the country's nationals in a recent plane crash.

Afkham expressed his sympathy with the families of the victims of the plane crash.

Earlier today, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani also condoled with the Algerian government and nation over the death of a group of Algerians and European nationals in a passenger plane which crashed on Thursday.

In a message addressed to Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, President Rouhani voiced Tehran's condolence with the Algerian people and government.

'The news on the downing of the Algerian passenger plane deeply depressed me,' President Rouhani said in his message, adding, 'I sincerely condole with Your Excellency and the noble Algerian nation on the death of innocent passenger and flight crews of this plane in the sad incidence.'

Algerian aviation authorities lost contact with an Air Algerie aircraft en route from Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso to Algiers.

Contact with flight AH 5017 was lost about 50 minutes after take-off, according to the APS state news agency.

An Algerian official was quoted as saying that the missing plane is Airbus A320 carrying 116 passengers, Reuters reported.

'I can confirm that it has crashed,' an Algerian aviation official said on Thursday.

The unnamed official declined to provide details as to the location of the plane or what had caused the accident.

The plane reported crashed after crossing the airspace of Niger's capital Niamey, according to a report by the Algerian television.
