Ex-Berlin mayor urges complete lifting of Iran sanctions

Berlin, Jan 28, IRNA -- Former Berlin mayor Walter Momper called for the removal of all Iran sanctions.

Although he welcomed the recent easing of the Iran embargo, Momper

said in an exclusive interview with IRNA that the best thing to do would be to do lift all sanctions.

Easing of the trade restrictions against Iran is of course 'positive' and shows that an agreement can be reached, if both sides are willing to take a step towards one another, he added.

Momper voiced cautious optimism that a comprehensive accord could be sealed with Iran over the next six months.

He urged stepped up efforts to promote the German-Iranian trade relations which dropped around 30 percent last year.

A major obstacle in improving the German-Iranian business ties is the problem of bank payments for goods and services, according to Momper.

Asked about the latest rush of European companies to invest in Iran, Momper said that the German firms would still be able to prevail in the Iranian market given their quality-made products.

The German companies have repeatedly expressed great interest in the Iranian market following the lifting of some of the western sanctions against Tehran over its nuclear program.

The German business community has also expressed serious concern that it was missing out on lucrative business deals with Iran.

The head of the Tehran-based German-Iranian Chamber of Industry and Commerce Daniel Bernbeck had warned earlier that Germany was to lose the Iranian market as other western investors were flocking to Tehran in the wake of the landmark November 24 Geneva nuclear accord.
