Ban Ki-moon calls Syrian refugees situation in Iraq 'regretful'

New York, Jan 15, IRNA – UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, on the sidelines of visiting Syrian refugees in Iraq, called their situation regretful and said that human brutality and relentlessness had caused such bitter situation.

Ban, accompanied by the UN Refugees Agency Chief Antonio Guterres and Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs Valerie Amos visited camp of Syrian refugees in Iraq on Tuesday morning.

He told refugees that he will attend Kuwait conference to deliver world strong support for Syrian refugees.

According to the report of the UN, currently there are 220 thousand Syrian refugees in Iraqi Kurdistan region.

In a meeting with Iraqi Kurdistan officials, Ban asked them to keep the borders for Syrian refugees open.
