Lebanese president hails Iran's regional, international peace efforts

Beirut, Jan 13, IRNA – Lebanese President Michel Suleiman said on Monday Iran's regional and international peace efforts have been effective, according to a statement released by Lebanon's presidential office.

In a meeting with visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Suleiman said talks and cordial ties between Iran and Arab countries are important and vital to regional stability.

On the upcoming international peace conference on Syria, Suleiman said that the conference should provide a road map for a peaceful settlement of Syrian crisis and let the Syrian nation decide on their own destiny.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Lebanese president, expressed satisfaction with the November 24 nuclear deal between Tehran and the G5+1 and their agreement to implement it as of Jan 20.

The Iranian foreign minister, for his part, expressed pleasure with positive political atmosphere in Lebanon for formation of a new government and praised Suleiman's role in this regard.

Zarif underlined the necessity of good relations between Iran and Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia in order to help foster peace and stability in the region.

Zarif called for an end to violence in Syria, stressing that Iran would continue its efforts to restore peace and stability in the region whether it is invited to Syria peace conference or not.

He appreciated efforts by the Lebanese government and president in tracking down and arrest of culprits behind the terrorist attack on Iranian embassy in Lebanon.

On the first leg of his regional tour, Zarif arrived in Beirut late Sunday heading a political and parliamentary delegation.

Zarif's first ever visit to Lebanon as Iran's foreign minister is taking place at the invitation of his Lebanese counterpart Adnan Mansour.
