Veep congratulates Libya’s independence anniversary

Tehran, Jan 12, IRNA – Iranian 1st Vice President Es’haq Jahangiri in a message congratulated the anniversary of Libya’s Independence Day to that country’s government and nation on Sunday.

In the message addressed to Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zeidan, Jahangiri has expressed hope that relying on serious efforts made by both countries’ officials and in a bid to safeguard the Iranian and Libyan nation’s highest interests, we will be witnesses to the further deepening and strengthening of comprehensive bilateral cooperation more than ever before.

The United Kingdom of Libya proclaimed its independence on December 24th, 1951; two years after a UN General Assembly passed a resolution making it a sovereign state.

December 24th also marked the anniversary of the execution, in 1931, of Omar Mukhtar, who led the Senussi forces against the Italians.

Since the February 17th Revolution, September 16th has also become the day when all Libyan martyrs are commemorated.
