Ashton likely to visit Iran by end of January

Tehran, Jan 12, IRNA – An informed source said Sunday that the European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton is likely to visit Iran by the end of January.

Speaking to IRNA on condition of anonymity, the source said Ms. Ashton is to visit the Middle East within coming days but her Mideast tour will not include Iran as Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will be on a three-nation tour to Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon.

However, the source added, the EU foreign policy chief's Tehran visit will probably take place by the end of this month in response to Zarif’s invitation.

Member of Iran’s nuclear negotiating team Abbas Araqchi had earlier said that he had re-invited the European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton to visit Iran.

Araqchi said Foreign Minister Mohammad-Javad Zarif in his New York visit had invited Ashton to visit Iran and he repeated his invitation in Geneva.

Meanwhile, another informed source had told IRNA previously that Ms. Ashton has an “open invitation” to visit Iran.
