10 foreign parliamentary delegations due to visit Iran by yearend: Official

Tehran, Jan 1, IRNA – Some 10 foreign parliamentary delegations are scheduled to visit Iran by the end of the current Iranian year (March 20), Hossein Sheikholeslam said on Wednesday.

Shekholeslam, an advisor to the Majlis speaker, said Majlis is making arrangements for the visits.

Given the intense schedule of Majlis in the last months of the year, it is not clear whether the visits could be made before the end of the year, Shekholeslam said.

The delegations willing to visit Iran include parliament speakers, members of parliamentary friendship groups or foreign commissions from different countries, he added.

On the postponement of a visit to Iran by a French parliamentary delegation, Shekholeslam said the visit will take place at a proper time.

A delegation from European Parliament visited Iran last month and a delegation from British parliament is scheduled to travel to Iran next week. The British delegation will be led by ex-foreign minister Jack Straw who is currently the head of Iran-UK parliamentary friendship group.

Also, the Italian parliament is due to dispatch a number of representatives to Tehran on Friday to make preparations for a visit to Iran by the Italian prime minister.

During their stay in Iran, the Italian lawmakers will also visit historical cities of Isfahan and Shiraz.

A parliamentary delegation from Germany is also expected to pay a visit to Iran soon to explore ways to expand bilateral ties with Iranian officials.

IRNA learned that the head of Foreign Policy Commission of the Irish parliament is due to visit Iran, but no date has been set for the visit yet.
