Biography of Iran's top nuclear negotiator

Tehran, May 22, IRNA - Saeed Jalili is a politician and the present Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC).

Jalili was born on September 6, 1965 in Mashad, capital of Khorassan Razavi province, in eastern Iran.



He holds a Phd in political sciences from Imam Sadeq University and he worked as a university lecturer.



Jalili is a veteran of the 1980-88 imposed war with Iraq.



He joined the Foreign Ministry in 1989 where he became deputy foreign minister for Euro-American affairs. He was appointed a senior director in policy planning in the Office of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution in 2001.



Jalili was named as advisor to the president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2005.



On October 20, 2007, he replaced Ali Larijani as the secretary of the council and hence chief nuclear negotiator of Iran.



The Guardian Council on Tuesday approved eight hopefuls, including Jalili, to run in the upcoming presidential race slated for June 14. A total of 686 hopefuls registered from May 7-11 for the 11th presidential election.



The president of Iran is elected for a four-year term in a national election.
