Mirzakhani honored at High Council for Iranian Expatriates Affairs

Ahmad Mirzakhani, the father of Professor Maryam Mirzakhani, who is an engineer and head of the board of directors of a charity institution in Iran, received the plaque of honor on behalf of his daughter because she couldn't attend the ceremony.

In an address to the audience, Ahmad Mirzakhani said that honoring scientists is a good tradition which would encourage young scientists to continue with their scientific efforts.

Majid Hallajzadeh, the representative of secretary general of High Council of Iranian Expatriates Affairs who was also present at the ceremony said that Iran takes pride in having valuable assets such as Prof. Mirzakhani.

"The presence of such young scientists in the world will help upgrade the level of human knowledge."

Fields Medal is awarded every 4 years to between 2 and 4 young mathematicians who must be no older than 40.

Maryam Mirzakhani, 37, a professor of mathematics at Stanford University is the first woman ever to win the prize since it was established in 1936.

Mirzakhani is a graduate of Tehran's Sharif University of Technology.

She was awarded the Fields Medal for her sophisticated and highly original contributions to the fields of geometry and dynamical systems.
