More libraries for schools

Tehran, Aug 12, IRNA -- A budget worth $3 million have been allocated by the Ministry of Education for developing school libraries across the nation, said the deputy education minister for cultural affairs.

Dr. Mohammad Reza Kaffash also said that in order to encourage book reading, numerous classes have been equipped with libraries.

"All primary schools will be equipped with libraries by the end of the current Iranian year (March 20, 2015)," he said.

Many experts have criticized the focus of Iranian school children on textbooks, as interest in book reading starts from childhood.

Per capita book reading is very low in Iran and stands at 19.5 minutes while global per capita book reading is 45 minutes.

Japan has one of the highest numbers of book readers and its per capita book reading is estimated at 90 minutes.

The relationship between book reading and development is undeniable.
