A commemorative stamp issued in his honor was unveiled to mark the author’s 74th birth anniversary, while parts of his great novel ‘Kelidar’ was recited on the sidelines of the ceremony, wrote the English-language paper 'Iran Daily' published Sunday.
Several Iranian literary and cultural figures as well as officials, including members of Sabzevar City Council, attended the event.
A lecture on ‘Dowlatabadi’s social and cultural perspectives’ was held afterward.
A message by prominent Iranian poet Simin Behbahani was also read out. Known as the ‘lioness of Iran’, she is currently in coma and hospitalized in Tehran.
Parts of the message, previously released for Dowlatabadi’s birth anniversary, reads as, “Dowlatabadi is without a doubt a gem of Iranian literature whose many works have been translated into other languages.”
Born in 1940, Dowlatabadi is known as a realist writer of rural life, in which he largely draws on his own experiences. He started writing in the 1960s and published several novels, novellas, short story collections and plays.
Dowlatabadi’s other significant works include his 1968 novel ‘The Tale of Baba Sobhan’ and his magnum opus, ‘Kelidar’, which he wrote between 1977 and 1984. His ‘Colonel’ was nominated for the 2011 man Asian Literary Prize.
