Minister asks UNICEF, WHO to prevent humanitarian crisis in Gaza

Tehran, July 28, IRNA - Iranian Health Minister Hassan Hashemi in separate letters to the World Health Organization (WHO) and The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) warned about ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza casued by Israeli assaults on the besieged enclave.

In his letter to the UNICEF's Executive Director Anthony Lake, Hashemi asked UNICEF to help protect Palestinian children's' rights enshrined in the international rules and regulations.

UNICEF as an international organization supporting children's rights can be effective in stopping violations against Gazan children, the health minister added.

In the meantime, Hashemi in a separate letter to the World Health Organization Director-General Margaret Chan, asked the organization to prevent humanitarian crisis in Gaza and provide Palestinians access to water, food and sanitary facilities.

Gaza has been blockaded by the Israeli regime since 2007, a situation that has caused a decline in the standard of living, unprecedented rise of unemployment, and unrelenting poverty.

More than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed and over 5,000 others injured in recent Israeli offensives on Gaza since July 8.
