Iran favors a safe, independent Iraq: Dy FM

Tehran, July 24, IRNA – Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said on Thursday that the Islamic Republic of Iran is interested in a safe and independent Iraq.

Amir-Abdollahian made the remarks, speaking to IRNA, shortly following the election of a new Iraqi president by the country's lawmakers.

The Iraqi Parliament on Thursday elected Kurdish politician Fouad Massoum as the country's new president to succeed Jalal Talabani.

Amir-Abdollahian underlined Iran's support for the Kurds, the Sunni and Shia Muslims in Iraq and said that terrorism has no place in Iraq's future.

The military, police, volunteers and armed forces in Iraq are strongly fighting the terrorists across the country in response to calls by the religious leaders, Amir-Abdollahian said.

He warned the Arab governments supporting the Takfiri terrorism in Iraq and said that they have to be seriously concerned about actions against their own security by the same terrorist group.
