Mashhad Univ. produces weight-loss cream

Tehran, July 22, IRNA - Mashhad Medical University researchers have made a weight-loss cream from the extract of liquorice.

“Glycyrrhetinic acid in the extract of liquorice rhizomes blocks 11 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and lower cortisol concentrations in adipose tissue,” Dr. Hossein Orafaei, professor of pharmaceuticals at the university’s Pharmaceutical Faculty said.

The expert noted that using the fast-absorbing cream has no effect on blood pressure.

Adipocytes, also known as lipocytes and fat cells, are the cells that primarily compose adipose tissue, specialized in storing energy as fat.

Cortisol is a steroid hormone. It is released in response to stress and a low level of blood glucocorticoid. Its primary functions are to increase blood sugar, suppress the immune system and aid the metabolism of fat, protein and carbohydrate. It also decreases bone formation.
