Tell others who you are!

Tehran, July 20, IRNA -- There is much more to our clothing choices than we might imagine.

For many people, what they wear is merely a matter of habit, but when we dress in the morning it might pay us to be a little more careful in the choices we make. Doing something different with your clothes might be a way of changing the impression others have of you.

While teenagers and young adults pay much more attention to their choices compared with other age groups, all people, regardless of their age, have been proven to behave differently in different clothes, said an Iranian psychologist.

Monday edition of the English language newspaper Iran Daily quotes Dr. Mohammad Maleki, as saying that a pair of stylish shoes could give its wearer's confidence a boost.

"Wearing official suits in the workplace could make employees feel more skilled," he said.

"Sometimes you could find comfort and peace by wearing a piece of cloth."

"The reality is that our choices could affect us and the people around us psychologically," he said, adding that the clothes we wear tell others what types of persons we are.

He urged people to think before deciding what to wear, as clothes have been proven to play a very important role in the quality of our job and personal relationships.

"Clothing serves as a substitute for character in the eyes of people who don't know us," the psychologist said.

Maleki said people very rarely trust persons with unironed and sloppy clothes since such style of wearing sends this message that the wearer doesn't really care about appearance, job and future.

The expert said some people are obsessed with fashion and tend to wear famous-brand clothes.

" People who always use them could be judged as materialistic persons with low self-esteem," he said. In fact people spend lots of money on brands to compensate for their lack of confidence.

Maleki said people with short and very tight clothes are found to be stingier compared to those wearing looser and longer types of clothes.

"People wearing very short and tight clothes suffer from emotional insecurity and try to focus on their body," he said.

The psychologist said people with personality disorder of narcissism tend to show off so that they usually wear shoes and clothes with unconventional and flashy colors.

"These people try to send these signals to others that they are very different and special. They seek attention."

The psychologist said that people who are used to wearing clothes with conventional and neutral styles and colors have usually friendly behavior and tend to blend in the crowd not to attract more attention.

Maleki said those in sports apparel signal their interest in athletic activities.

He said those, who repeatedly wear one type of garment, make others think they are less creative or very depressed.

"If you want to exhibit your special traits and advantages, you should better wear clothes that make you ready for the activity you have ahead of you."
