Natural resources at grave risk

Tehran, July 16, IRNA -- Iran's natural resources are at grave risk mainly because of ignorance, said the deputy head of Majlis Agriculture, Water and Natural Resources Commission.

Addressing a Majlis session on Tuesday, Gholamreza Nouri Qezeljeh added that Iranians are among the most wasteful consumers in the world.

Thursday edition of the English language newspaper Iran Daily quoted the lawmaker as warning about the water crisis facing the country.

"Iranians consume nonrenewable resources two times more than the global figures," he said, adding that they have consumed 25 percent of the total amount of water stored in reservoirs that must remain untouched.

Nouri warned about severe water shortage in the country and said it is vital to preserve water resources because Iran is marching toward drought.

"The country's water resources are predicted to decline dramatically within 20 years," he said.

He also warned about the rapid soil degradation in Iran and said the speed of soil erosion is double the global figure.

"Agricultural lands, which are limited in Iran, are being cleared or their functions are being changed," he said, stressing that such lands are expected to ensure food security.

“Have we ever asked ourselves where we are going? Have we targeted our enemies? Is our goal to reach self-sufficiency or to destroy the future of our children? If these are not our goal, why are we invading our natural resources?"

The MP said the conditions of Iranian forests and rangelands are not acceptable.

"Our wetlands have dried up and in other parts we are seeing destructive floods," he said, warning about the worsening condition of Iran's environment.

Pointing to the plan to increase Iran's population, Nouri said food security is the precondition for having a larger population.

"Food security and sustainability of natural resources are important factors for encouraging population growth," he said.

Nouri called for adoption of scientific methods in using natural resources to have a green and healthy economy.

"Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has also urged state official to promote green economy and increase environmental preservation," he said.
