Iran population reaches 78m: Official

Tehran, July 16, IRNA - A senior official with Iran's Civil Registration Organization recently announced that the country's population has reached 78m.

Director General of the Center Ali Akbar Mahzoun, told IRNA on Tuesday that 333,669 babies were born since the beginning of the current Iranian year (started March 21).

Iran is now planning to increase its population to 100 million by 2025 and to 150 million by 2060.

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei had earlier warned about the declining trend in population brought on by family planning policies adopted by governments since 1990.

In separate letters to the heads of the three branches of government as well as that of the Assembly of Experts, Ayatollah Khamenei said the issue of population growth was extremely important for enhancing national power and development.
