Larijani congratulates newly elected Iraqi speaker

Tehran, July 16, IRNA – Majlis (parliament) Speaker Ali Larijani in a message released on Wednesday congratulated Salim al-Jabouri's election as new Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament.

Larijani called the move a step forward, noting that it will have positive effect on the country's security against the Takfiri groups' terrorist activities.

Iraqi nation and government can pass through the current crisis by boosting democracy, executing constitution and stressing the national unity, he noted.

The speaker underlined that Iran supports Iraq's sovereignty and independence.

He expressed hope that parliamentary relations would improve between the two neighboring states.

Iraqi lawmakers have elected Salim al-Jabouri, a well-known moderate Sunni politician, as new parliament speaker on Tuesday.

After the election of the parliament speaker, lawmakers are now trying to pick the next prime minister and president.

Under a de facto agreement among communities in Iraq, the prime minister is a Shia Arab, the president a Kurd, and the parliament speaker a Sunni Arab.
