Iran ready to boost ties with Spain, official

Tehran, July 16, IRNA – Deputy Foreign Minister Morteza Sarmadi here on Tuesday voiced Tehran's readiness to expand ties with Madrid based on mutual interests.

He made the remarks in a meeting with the Chairman of Foreign Policy Committee of the Spanish Parliament Duran Lleida.

Sarmadi referred to Spain as an important country in the European Union and said there certainly existed many areas of cooperation between the two countries both at regional and international levels.

He further pointed to the historic ties between the two nations and hoped mutual relations would return to the same good status as before in such areas as energy, agriculture and industry.

Commenting on current situation in Iraq, he said the present crisis in the country is in continuation of the Syrian crisis and outcome of the same plot.

He further stressed the need for a collective move both at regional and international levels to fight terrorism and extremism.

The Spanish official described bilateral ties as positive and said his visit to Tehran aimed to exchange views with Iranian officials on various topics including ways to bolster bilateral ties.

He also hoped that Iran and the 5+1 would reach a final agreement on Tehran's peaceful nuclear program.

Referring to Iran's significant position in the Middle East, he said Tehran could play an important role in restoring stability and security to the region.
