Iranian police seize narcotics-loaded truck

Tehran, July 15, IRNA - Police in northeastern Iran have confiscated a truck that was carrying over one ton of narcotics.

Brigadier Bahman Amiri Moqaddam, the police chief of Khorasan Razavi province, said that the drugs were seized late on Sunday, adding that the truck was travelling from Afghanistan to the city of Mashhad, said Tuesday's edition of the English-language paper 'Iran Daily'.

The truck driver was also arrested, he said, adding that investigation is underway by police to detain the other criminals related to the smuggling of the drugs.

Iran shares a long border with Afghanistan, which supplies about 90 percent of the world’s opium, from which heroin is made.

Iran has lost many security personnel in skirmishes with drug traffickers in volatile regions bordering Pakistan.

Iran, which is praised by international community for its anti-drug campaign, seizes hundreds of tons of narcotics each year.
