Iran presents plan for int’l NCDs center

Tehran, July 12, IRNA - Iran has presented a plan to launch international observation center for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) under the supervision of the United Nations, declared a Health Ministry representative.

Dr. Amir Hossein Takian, a senior Health Ministry official, has traveled to New York to take part in a top-level gathering on the health system of various countries.

Also the final document, which has been discussed and studied for months at the UN headquarters in New York, was approved.

The inaugural session of the gathering held on Thursday with the participation of head of UN General Assembly, representative of the UN secretary general, director general of World Health Organization, and UNDP Administrator Helen Clark. The representatives of a number of countries proposed their views.

Dr.Takian commented on the approaches of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the current programs regarding Health Overhaul Plan in Iran in line with general health policies notified by Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, as well as measures conducted in preventing and controlling NCDs and national plans.

Pointing to recent order of President Hassan Rouhani on Health Overhaul Plan, he remarked on the steps taken by Iran to prevent and control NcD which was in line with the political document ratified by the UN General Assembly in 2011.

He also pointed to improvement in health and medical treatment system across Iran, the government’s comprehensive programs on providing health services to all the people as laid down in the Health Overhaul Plan including increasing the budget by 50 percent, raising insurance coverage to insure nine million low-income people, improvement in quality of hospital services, and promoting air medical emergency.

Takian said Iran was among the first countries to join the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC).

He underlined the political will of the Islamic Republic of Iran in supporting UN and WHO programs to prevent and control NCDs.

The top-level gathering was held to study the achievements in preventing and controlling NCDs at UN General Assembly in New York during July 10-11.
