Narcissism, difficult-to-treat disorder

Tehran, July 12, IRNA - Narcissism is a personality disorder in which self-centeredness arises from excessive interest in or admiration of oneself and one’s physical appearance.

As a phenomenon, narcissism has been recognized since the time of the ancient Greeks. It was Narcissus, after all, who fell in love with his own reflection. Unable to pull away, he withered away and died.

According to Mehrnoush Darini, a psychologist, the disorder, which appears in adult years, causes those affected to act very proud and overconfident, an English-language paper reported on Saturday.

“Such persons assume that other people attach special importance to them. They always try to establish relationship with those of higher social classes,” 'Iran Daily' quoted her as saying.

“Appearance, strength and other abilities are of high significance for narcissistic persons who are very sensitive about criticisms.”

Darini said men account for 50 to 75 percent of those affected by narcissistic personality disorder.

Individuals with narcissistic personality disorder have an excessive sense of self-importance and exaggerate their progress in life. They expect others to recognize them as outstanding characters.

“They always think about unlimited success, excessive power, romantic love and perfect beauty. Such persons, who are in dire need of admiration, believe that only a special group of people are able to understand them,” she said.

Those with narcissistic personality disorder are very irrational and take advantage of other people or things for their own gain. They are very envious and have no sense of sympathy with others. They always exhibit selfish and self-seeking behaviors.

Darini noted that unfortunately, treating narcissism is very difficult, and a combination of medication and psychotherapy generally provides the best results in this respect.

Psychologists identify and analyze the root cause of the thoughts that lead such persons to become narcissistic.
