Explosion injures five miners

Tehran, July 10, IRNA - At least five people were wounded in a mine blast in the central province of Yazd.

Provincial Police Chief Colonel Iraj Kakavand said the explosion took place on Tuesday at a granite mine in the city of Ardakan.

He said the five miners who suffered burns were rushed to hospital. Kakavand said that the injured are in critical condition.

He added that the incident was caused when a worker lighted a cigarette near 1,000 kg of sulfur and charcoal inside the mine.

Judicial officials and police have launched an investigation into the incident.
