Kuwaiti FM: Iraq disintegration dangerous

Tehran, July 8, IRNA – Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sabah al-Khaled al-Hamad al-Sabah stressed the need for maintaining Iraq's unity and territorial integrity, saying that Iraq's disintegration is dangerous.

In a meeting with Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab-African affairs, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, he added, "We believe in fighting terrorism and Kuwait's policy in this regard is in conformity with Iraq's Constitution."

He underlined the need for maintaining the country's unity and continuing current political trend based on Iraq's Constitution.

He also stressed the need for expediting the election of parliament speaker, president and prime minister of Iraq, saying that delays in holding parliamentary session will not contribute to the situation in the country.

Al-Sabah also said his country attaches paramount importance to consultations with Iran on regional issues such as Iraq.

Amir-Abdollahian, for his part, described recent terrorist developments in Iraq as dangerous for the region and world, underscoring the need for international community's cooperation to counter the evil phenomenon of terrorism.

Maintaining Iraq's political unity and territorial integrity based on its Constitution are among principles of Iran's policies regarding Iraq, he said.

There is a single democratically-elected government in Iraq which should not be undermined through violence and extremism, he said.

Mechanism of recent terrorist attacks on Iraq is indicative of existence of foreign elements behind the offensives, he said, warning of continuation of such a trend in case of other countries' silence.

Iraq' neighbors should pay heed to the issue that terrorism may spill over to other countries and it will show mercy to no one, the deputy foreign minister said.

"Iran is alongside Iraq in fighting terrorism and calm in that country and other regional states such as Kuwait and Saudi Arabia is important to us," he said.
