Iran minister impeachment cancelled

Tehran, July 8, IRNA - Iran's Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani and Minister of Science, Research and Technology Reza Faraji Dana held a meeting and discussed an impeachment motion prepared by a group of MPs against Faraji Dana, a lawmaker said on Monday.

Qasem Jafari, a member of Education and Research Commission of the Majlis, added it was decided that the demands of the planners of the motion be followed within the framework of the law within the next month, said 'Iran Daily' in its Upside/Downside column on Tuesday.

He said that a group of senior parliamentarians also were present in the meeting.

“No MPs in the meeting have illegal demands, and Faraji Dana also pledged to act within the framework of law,” the English-language paper quoted Jafari as saying.

MP Mahmoud Negahban Salami recently said that the ‘hire and fire’ of officials of the ministry is the main reason for the motion.

Dana's supporters argue that it is the right of a minister to arrange his team members.

Hundreds of professors of Iranian universities also have voiced support for Faraji Dana.

If the minister moves within the framework of law, there will be no impeachment after one month, he said.
